An earl from Stauntun, whose wife Gwynyfyr died prior to the events of After Hastings, he is left with his son, Thurlkill. A good friend to Harold from the days when they were both fostered to King Edward's household, Aethelwine is the one advisor Harold trusts who he is not related to. Although Aethelwine prefers to spend his time at his estate's on the Welsh marches, his loyalty to Harold means he'll travel throughout the kingdom, or even beyond England's shores, to serve Harold's cause. He has fostered Thurlkill to Harold, who has taken a greater than ordinary interest in his friend's son's upbringing and fortunes.
